This event was primarily designed to celebrate our country's Independence Day and pay tribute to Mustang 22, the call sign of a CH-
47 helicopter assigned to Det 1 of the the Oregon National Guard unit in Camp Pendleton, Oregon.  ‘Mustang 22’ was shot down
during an infiltration mission approximately five miles (8km) north of Deh Chopan in southeast Zabul Province. An enemy rocket-
propelled grenade hit the lead Chinook after it had delivered Afghan troops into the designated landing zone. The helicopter was
engulfed in flames and crashed. All five crewmen aboard lost their lives, some of whom, were Oregon guardsmen.  Sadly, this was
not the only loss this heroic unit has had to suffer in the war on terrorism.  As is the case with all of our military, our Guard regularly
make incredible sacrifices here at home to serve their communities and their country, and without hesitation they deployed to
Afghanistan to combat a ruthless enemy.  In the end, they made the ultimate sacrifice. This is our way to honor our own here at
home.
To our Air Force, Army, Marine, Navy and Coast Guard family:
WE SALUTE YOU!
